Strongly interacting nucleons

This research program addresses strongly interacting systems appearing in laboratories on earth and in astrophysical settings. Specifically, we theoretically investigate neutron stars (compact astrophysical objects), nuclei (especially the isotopes created in state-of-the-art experimental facilities), and cold atoms (the coldest systems on earth). Our studies range from pen-and-paper intuitive approaches to large-scale calculations on modern supercomputers. Specific problems tackled include: a) the attempt to connect the interactions between neutrons and protons to, on the one hand, the underlying level (of quarks and gluons) and, on the other, studies of large nuclear systems, b) the physics of superfluidity (i.e., the absence of viscous flow) in nuclei and in stars, c) the use of systems of ultracold atomic gases to provide experimental constraints on the properties of neutrons and protons. Graduate and undergraduate students (including summer students) play a major role in these studies.**
