Quantum enabled measurements are a way to vastly improve measurement sensitivity in a variety of domains. Magnetic field measurement is a key target for this, since precision measurement of small magnetic fields is a crucial parameter for geophysical exploration, a variety of technological fields, and biophysical measurements. Optically detected magnetic resonance using solid-state diamond crystals containing NV centres is a powerful way to measure small magnetic fields. Measurements can be achieved without the bulky cryogenic cooling apparatus needed for other techniques such as SQUIDS. In this proposal we propose to design, build and demonstrate a quantum magnetometer using diamond NV centres and a novel quantum Berry phase readout protocol. This will be a step toward a compact field-deployable unit with applications in geophysics and other areas. Such a device has the potential to revolutionize magnetic field measurements using the power of quantum mechanical measurements.
