英文摘要
Clubroot management in Canada relies heavily on the use of clubroot resistant varieties. Unfortunately, over the years, the resistance has been rapidly overcome by new pathotypes of Plasmodiophora brassicae although there is also evidence that complex mixes of virulent and avirulent P. brassicae populations co-exist, with virulent populations eventually taking over a field and causing infection. With precise knowledge of the diversity of pathotypes in the field and their virulence towards commercial canola varieties it would be possible to tailor the selection of resistant canola varieties to use in an infested field for the longest possible time. Through the analysis of the genome of a wide array of P. brassicae isolates from East and West Canada we will be able to identify specific targets that can be used to identify if they are virulent or avirulent. Our goal is to develop a molecular assay that allows fast and precise identification of avirulent pathotypes and identify the suitable resistance germplasm for each grower and avoid economic loses linked to the disease, and the environmental impact of the chemical-based management.
