The last discovery grant was devoted to further developments of our electromagnetic simulation tools and methods, new types of antennas and associated micro-fabrication technologies. In biomedical engineering, we worked on remote sensors and new medical imaging modalities (heart output monitor). We have also ventured into anew area for my group: electromagnetically enhanced oil (hydrocarbons) recovery. The latter topic has very practical context and the effort was strongly focused on IP development. 2 patents in the area were granted, and 4 more filed. At the core of the program was the research into applied electromagnetics. The emphasis was on "applied"; indeed, the theory was developed, and simulation tools built to facilitate the design of new devices. Students in the program went on to become professors, C-level executives (CMG, Nanalysis) or engineering directors (Uber, Nanalysis), and landed coveted jobs (e.g. at Apple).A strong team was established, and a research environment created that fostered collaboration and knowledge transfer between students. This was a successful strategy, and I would like to continue this approach in the next five years. However, while the theoretical developments will remain actively researched, the focus of theproposed research will continue to shift toward systems and applications. This broad knowledge base of the Applied Electromagnetics group allows us to embark upon complex problems spanning multiple disciplines. Objectives: The long-term goals of the proposed research are to develop sophisticated systems, devices and simulation tools in applied electromagnetics. In all areas, we will integrate what is currently considered disparate technologies and apply them to solve practical problems. To bring us closer to our long-term goals we have identified the following inter-related specific project for this period: Develop passive and active mm-wave antennas for vehicular radar Develop methods for noise characterization of antenna arrays Develop biomedical devices, and specifically remote sensors for vitals Develop fast, hardware accelerated, multi-physics and multi-scale simulation tools. Develop antennas and ultra high efficiency RF power technologies for RF heating of oil formations
