This research focuses on empowering patients and healthcare providers by using innovative information visualization systems to review and analyze patients' health data. During a clinical visit, patients and healthcare providers need to discuss a large amount of data. However, there is a lack of technological systems to effectively support discussing patient health data. To fill this gap, my research focuses on empowering patients and healthcare providers by 1) designing and developing visualization systems to support the process of sharing and reviewing patient health data and 2) integrating these visualizations into the Canadian healthcare systems. Healthcare providers need to discuss a large amount of information with patients during a clinical visit. In addition, patients sometimes collect their health data and bring their data to the clinic, expecting the healthcare providers to review and make sense of these data. Sharing self-collected data has recently become even more crucial since many clinical visits are now virtual, and personal health data visualizations are a valuable source of information in virtual consultations. In Canada, the average length of medical consultations is between 10 to 20 minutes. As a result, there is not enough time to review, analyze, and discuss all the patient data. Visualizing patient medical data may be a potential solution since visualization can accurately summarize data and display outliers, patterns, and trends. However, to display and interact with patient data visualizations during clinical visits, we need the right technology. A shared display can facilitate data reviewing and collaborative data analysis. This might extend to shared surfaces and/or tablets. Thus, designing and developing visualizations on sharable surfaces potentially may facilitate co-reviewing and co-analyzing patient medical data during patient-provider consultations. My team and I will explore how to design, develop, and evaluate innovative interactive data visualizations on shared surfaces supporting healthcare providers and patients to share, collaboratively review, and analyze medical information during clinical visits, whether in-person or virtual. Additionally, our research will explore the technical implications of implementing visualizations systems on shared surfaces in clinical rooms and inform the deployment of interactive patient data visualizations into the Canadian healthcare systems. The innovative interactive patient data visualization systems that will be developed in this research program will have the potential to provide the means to establish effective data-driven communication between patients and healthcare providers in clinics.
