Interface is one of the key factors influencing the thermal conductivity of composite materials. The role of the interfaces becomes increasingly significant in nanoscale, since the interfacial thermal resistance approaches a magnitude similar to that of the nano-material itself. This research proposal aims to study the interface in the polymer nanocomposites. The complex interfaces are classified into several categories by employing interface dimension and interface composition, and the corresponding simplified geometric figures are drawn. For each category of interface, its effect on heat transport in the nanocomposite is studied by experimental test, theoretical calculation and computer simulation. The impact of interface tuning is correlated with the change of interface dimension and interface composition. Therefore it can be evaluated via the functional relation between interface thermal resistance and those of interface dimension and interface composition. The obtained result of interface thermal resistance is included in a previously developed unit cell model, which is used for calculating the thermal conductivity of polymer composite, to reflect the influence of micro interface on macro material thermal conductivity. The research work in this proposal can deepen the understanding of thermal conductivity of polymer composites and shed some light on the transport phenomenon at nanoscale, which provides guidance on preparing polymer nanocomposites and adjusting their performance.
