Yb-doped media have the absorption band that is covered by high power InGaAs laser diodes and permit direct diode pumping. The broader emission bandwidths in Yb-doped media make them sufficiently to support sub-picosecond or femtosecond pulses. At abroad, more attractive has been direct to the diode-pumped Yb-doped ion lasers, which develops the potential of efficient and compact all-solid-state ultrashort pulse lasers in the infrared region for many applications. However, the diode-pumped Yb-doped ion mode-locked lasers are not still reported at home. . We presented the proposal to develop the new diode-pumped Yb-doped femtosecond lasers. The important results and progresses are included as following: A CW output of 165mW at a high absorbed-pump-power-output-power slope efficiency of 57.8% was obtained from Yb:glass with a high doping rate as much as 19% pumped by a Ti:sapphire laser at 940nm, and the tunable range from 1038nm to 1064nm was demonstrated. The self-mode-locking operation of the Yb:glass laser was achieved with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), and the 630fs pulses at a center wavelength of 1050nm was generated. An all-solid-state and tunable Yb:YAG laser double-end-pumped by two diode lasers was demonstrated. A CW output of 66mW at about 1050nm and a slope efficiency of 12.7% with respect to the absorbed pump power were obtained. The wavelength tunable range was 25nm, from 1030.5-1055.5nm. The all-solid-state mode-locked Yb:YAG laser was achieved by a pair of prisms for dispersion compensation and a SESAM for assisting mode-locking and ~1ps pulses was obtained. The new broadband negative dispersion mirror with multiple Gires-Tournois interferometers was designed for use of the Yb-doped femtosecond lasers. The femtosecond autocorrelator with a ultrabroad response wavelength range of 400~800nm was demonstrated based on ZnSSe two-photon absorption photodetectors. Taking advantage of the characteristics of compact and broadband tunable, the all-solid-state Yb-doped mode-locked lasers presented by this proposal can be used in various fields such as the Laser-driven inertial confinement fusion, micromachining, chemistry, biomedicine and optical communication. Therefore, there are important scientific meaning and application value for this research work.
