Much progress has been made in recent years towards the understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling flower development. In particular, a number of genes that play important roles during flower development in different plant species have been isolated and characterized in detail。 Genetic models for flower development have been established. However, very little is known about a fundamental biological topic in flower development: the gynoecium fusion. We characterized extensively an Arabidopsis mutant, leunig (lug), which showed abnormalities in carpel fusion. By genetic and morphological analyses, we proved that the LUG functions are required for the gynoecium fusion. In addition, we identified another participant, the FIL gene, in the gynoecium fusion. lug fil double mutant demonstrated severe phenotypes with completely unfused flower organs. By the research work that we performed, we have established a solid base towards the understanding of regulatory network in gynoecium fusion.
