Time is a fundamental dimension of our existence; and the periodic beat enables temporal information to be organized and processed according to expected points in time. Beat-based temporal processing is an essential mechanism underlying precise and effective processing of temporal information, having important significance for understanding the function and evolution of the brain. The traditional auditory-specific hypothesis that was proposed based on the auditory over visual advantage in beat-based temporal processing, has been challenged by recent vision research progresses including the work from the lab of the applicant. Based on these progresses and further findings from pre-experiments, in the present project the applicant proposes the non-auditory-specific hypothesis, and plans to take vision research as the breakthrough point, use behavioral and brain-imaging (EEG and fMRI) approaches, to elucidate non-auditory-specific mechanisms of beat-based timing processing. The research of this project will advance current research of beat-based timing processing in terms of both theoretical construction and methodological development, and has important implications for a better understanding of cognitive and neural mechanisms of beat-based temporal processing.
