中国近代建筑史可谓在外来影响下建筑生产方式由传统走向近代化的过程。在华外籍建筑师，作为此中“外来影响”最主要的施加主体之一，是中国近代建筑史研究的重要内容与线索。外籍建筑师多活跃于上海，当前研究因史源单一、研究视角受限而遭遇瓶颈。为求突破，本课题将综合利用国内外出版文献（通商名录、名人录、专业报刊等）、网络及数据库（家谱网及近代报刊数据库等）、档案、访谈等多重史源对近代上海外籍建筑师相关基础资料进行系统调查整理；基于调查再进行多层视角的研究：宏观层面借鉴社会学对社会群体的研究对其群体进行分析；微观层面选定典型个案（建筑师、建筑事务所、建筑职能部门），中观层面选择专题研究方向（建筑技术、建筑思潮和职业发展），进行深入的个案和专题研究。针对近代上海外籍建筑师，本课题旨在达到“查个体，知群体，解活动，析影响”之目标，以拓展并深化对其群体和个体的认知，并以之为线索和切入点推进上海近代建筑史的研究。

The history of modern Chinese architecture was a process of modernization of building production under foreign influences. As one of the most important subjects of these foreign influences, foreign architects who have been working in China are important contents and clues in the study of modern Chinese architectural history. Most foreign architects have been working in Shanghai, but related studies are confronted with bottlenecks due to limited historical sources and confined research perspectives. Based on multiple sources such as published literature both home and aboard (mainly Trade directory, Who’s who, professional journals and newspapers), websites and databases (genealogy websites and databases of modern newspapers and magazines, etc.), archives, and interviews, this study aims to do a systematic investigation on the basic information of foreign architects in Shanghai. Based on the investigation, comprehensive studies will be carried out on multilevel perspectives: in the macro level, the research will draw on the experience of the sociological research on social groups to analyze the group; in the micro level, case studies will be carried out on selected typical cases (architects, architects’ offices, building departments), in the meso level, monographic studies will be carried out on selected research directions such as construction technologies, architectural trends and professional development. In view of modern Shanghai foreign architects, this research aims to investigate the individuals, understand the group, unscramble their activities, and analyze their influences, so as to expand and deepen the cognition of the group and individuals, and take them as clues and breakthrough points to promote the research of the architectural history of modern Shanghai.
