本项目获得批准之时正好是LHC对撞机实验取得第一批实验数据的关键性时刻。在项目执行的过程中,ATLAS探测器经历第一次运行(称之为Run 1),不断积累数据。本项目的研究内容是WW产生截面的测量以及规范玻色子反常耦合的研究。 精确测量强子对撞机上的WW 产生截面可以检验标准模型中的规范波色子之间的相互作用。玻色子之间的耦合强度与标准模型可能存在的偏离(即反常耦合)可能在总截面和事例运动学分布特征(微分截面)中体现出来。这必将是新物理存在的直接证据,也是探索标准模型之外新物理的重要线索。另一方面,标准模型中的WW 电弱产生过程是很多重要的新物理寻找的不可约本底,例如,在Higgs->WW的性质研究中, WW的电弱产生就是最重要的本底。电弱产生过程的精确测量可以使得这些寻找工作更加灵敏,可靠。本项目利用LHC实验上的ATLAS数据中的双轻子事例,精确测量了WW产生过程,限制了反常耦合。在项目执行的过程中,阶段性的结果陆续以ATLAS conference note和正式期刊文章的形式公开发表。截至目前,已经有三篇论文正式发表,总引用218次。第四篇正式论文已经完成,目前正在合作组内进行投稿前的最后评审。论文中的结果已经以conference note的形式公开, 在领域内引起了很大反响。特别是不少理论物理学家针对我们公布的结果,发表了一系列论文。讨论的热点主要有两个:一方面热烈讨论WW事例中的伴随喷注个数和喷注横动量分布的精确计算。另一方面,实验结果精度的不断提高促使理论物理学家开始投入精力计算高阶电弱修正。目前的研究表明,在高能量前沿,在一些特定的相空间区域,电弱次领头阶的修正相当重要。我的四名博士研究生的学业得到了本项目的资助。其中两名学生以此课题为论文题目,获得了博士学位。在攻读学位期间,他们分别由ATLAS合作组指派,代表合作组在Physics at LHC 2012和La Thuile 2015等著名国际学术会议上报告本课题相关的阶段性成果。这些标志着我们课题组的工作在ATLAS合作组内得到了同行们的肯定,具有较高的“显示度”。通过本课题,我们对于双轻子末态,丢失横动量等末态特征有了很好的把握。以此为基础,我们在ATLAS课题组提出了原创性的利用WWW末态测量quartic gauge coupling及Higgs与W粒子耦合的新课题。
