Identify and disentangle the assembly processes is one of the main goals of modern community ecology. Environmental and spatial effects are often used to explain the meta-community assembly. As submerged macrophytes present highly phenotypic plasticity and dispersals are restricted strongly by water flow, they were considered as an ideal group for the study of meta-community. Based on nested sampling design we plan to make field survey on submerged macrophyte communities in different catchments from two lake regions (Yunnan-Guizhou plateau lake region and Northeast plain-mountain lake region). The environmental factors, spatial information, submerged macrophyte community structure, functional traits and variations will be measured and collected from sampling plot to water body, catchment and region. The sequences of ITS, trnL, matK and rbcL of each species will be achieved from GenBank and used to generate phylogenetic correlations between each pair of species. The raw data will be included in 5 matrices: sites × species abundance, sites × environmental traits, sites × spatial traits, species × functional traits, species × species (phylogenetic correlation). We will use the Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities (HMSC) to identify the effects of phenotypic plasticity and phylogenetic correlation on community assembly in local and regional scales, and use this model to predict submerged macrophyte community succession in specific scene. These results will enrich the theory of meta-community assembly, and also can provide scientific instructions about the restoration of submerged vegetation in degraded habitats.
