Arnold, Ann THE ADVENTUROUS CHEF: Alexis Sayer. II. by author. ISBN 0374-31665-1. New York: Frances Foster Books,2002. 40 pp. $17.00. Alexis Soyer was one of the greatest cooks of the 19th century. His charisma, creativity, intelligence, and social conscienceare beautifully illustrated here, further enhancing his distinction. An avid inventor who vowed "to help everyone to eat well," Soyer designed London's Reform Club Kitchen for the rich, built a model soup kitchen for the poor during the Great Potato Famine, and published "The Modern Housewife" for the middle class. He also worked with Florence Nightingale to teach soldiers to feed themselves during the CrimeanWar. Arnold's witty storytelling and whimsical drawings aptly capture Soyer's dedication to others, as well as to his vocation. Ages 9-12. Reviewed by Gina Hoagland, Olney, MD
