Letpbe a prime number. Mazur proved that a geometrically maximal unramified abelian covering ofoveris given by the Shimura covering, that is, a unique subcovering ofof degree. In this short paper, we show that a geometrically maximal abelian coveringofoverunramified outside cusps is cyclic of degree. The main ingredient for the construction ofis the generalized Dedekind eta functions.
