Study of the Theological properties of leukocytes is a fascinating subject, because these cells can be observed in two different states. In the passive state, leukocytes are spherical and they deform only when an external stress is applied, such as plasma fluid stress or an adhesive stress to a substrate. Once the external stress is removed the cell returns to the spherical shape. Leukocytes circulating in the microcirculation or rolling on the venous endothelium are usually in the passive state (1,2). In the active state, leukocytes deform spontaneously without an external force acting on them other than a uniform hydrostatic pressure. Therefore, the required energy is supplied by the cell itself. The leukocytes develop membrane projections (pseudo-pods) which lead to irregular cell shapes (3). In the circulation leukocytes deform spontaneously when they migrate across the endothelial wall (4) or in a chemotactic gradient (5–7), and during phagocytosis (8).
