9985004HagnessPhotonic microstructures may enable the development of high-densityphotonic integrated circuits with unprecedented optical informationprocessing capabilities. Their success critically depends upon theavailability of accurate and efficient modeling techniques to understandand exploit the novel effects that emerge as the dimensions of opticaldevices are reduced to the length-scale of the optical wavelength. Theprimary objective of the proposed research plan is to develop advancedfirst-principles simulation tools based on the finite-differencetime-domain method for modeling electromagnetic wave propagation inphotonic microstructures. These tools will be used to investigatedispersive and nonlinear effects in photonic crystals and antiguidingstructures in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. The computationalmodels will be experimentally validated through collaborative work at theUniversity of Wisconsin and at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories. Theprimary objective of the proposed educational plan is to enhanceelectromagnetics education through the use of innovative teachingapproaches in two core undergraduate electromagnetics courses and thedevelopment of a graduate-level course on methods in computationalelectromagnetics. Web-based lectures will be developed and assessed forstudent use outside the classroom so that more time in-class may be usedfor potentially higher value-added experiential activities. Numericalmethods will be incorporated into both undergraduate and graduate-levelcourses.***
