Supporting Compiled Communication on Commodity Networks

本项目研究的是商用网络上的编译通信技术。在编译通信中，通过使用编译器分析程序的通信需求并静态地管理网络资源来支持通信，从而实现高性能的通信。结果，诸如缓冲器管理的运行时通信开销被减少和/或在多个通信上摊销，并且提高了通信性能。编译通信比传统的通信优化技术更强大，因为它在编译器和硬件/操作系统/运行时系统中执行通信优化。所提出的研究成果是支持编译通信模型的MPI库的扩展，基于SUIF的可使用编译通信模型生成通信代码的重构编译器，实验演示了使用编译通信模型可以实现多大的性能改进，以及清楚地识别了编译通信模型的优点和局限性。

This project investigates the compiled communication technique on commodity networks. In compiled communication, high performance communication is achieved by using the compiler to analyze the communication requirement of a program and to manage network resources statically to support the communications. As a result, runtime communication overheads, such as buffer management, are reduced and/or amortized over a number of communications, and the communication performance is improved. Compiledcommunication is more powerful than traditional communication optimization techniques in that it performs communication optimizations in both thecompiler and the hardware/operating system/runtime system. The outcomeof the proposed research is an extension of the MPI library that supportsthe compiled communication model, a SUIF based restructure compiler that can generate communication code using the compiled communication model,an experimental demonstration of how much performance improvement can beachieved by using the compiled communication model, and a clear identification of the advantages and limitations of the compiled communicationmodel.
