AbstractSteven W. Shaw and Alan G. Haddow, Michigan State UniversityProposal Number 0084947The Dynamic Performance of Nonlinear Vibration AbsorbersThe objective of the proposed work is to gain an improved understanding ofthe dynamic response and performance of systems that utilize multiplevibration absorbers and to distill this knowledge into design guidelines.Of specific interest are centrifugally driven pendulum absorbers that areused for reducing torsional vibrations in rotor applications. Theseabsorbers consist of masses that are suspended from the rotor in such amanner that their motion counteracts the effects of fluctuating torques thatact on the rotor. This study employs both analysis and experimentation ofsuch absorbers. The analysis focuses on mathematical modeling and theapplication of predictive techniques, including perturbation methods andsymmetric dynamic bifurcation theory. The desired performance of absorbersis achieved by proper selection of design parameters that are included inthe formulation. Experimentation is carried out on an existing torsionalvibration facility that allows for control of the mean rotor speed andfluctuating torque components. Specific topics being investigated include:the application of absorbers to reduce vibrations in rotating beams, the useof absorbers for shake reduction, the avoidance of localization in absorbersystems, absorbers for multi-harmonic excitation, and the transientperformance of absorbers. By systematic investigation of nonlinearbehavior, instabilities, and vibration localization, this study offersstrategies for avoiding effects that limit the performance of absorbersystems, and the results are used to provide useful recommendations forimplementation of systems of absorbers in rotating systems.*******************************************************************
