0608870GesquiereThis project seeks to develop a fundamental understanding of processes in organic photovoltaic devices at the nanoscale and has broad implications for use of solar energy as a renewable energy source. Different classes of conjugated polymers and hybrid nanoparticles would be studied to determine the ideal material properties for organic photovoltaic applications. The project aims to determine relationships of opto-electronic processes to nanoscale structural and interfacial properties. Polymer probes previously developed by the PIs will be studied to evaluate the effects of the nanostructure architecture on photovoltaic performance. This work would contribute to our understanding of processes controlling charge separation at interfaces. The PIs are young researchers with good publication records and appropriate experience in this area of research. The project will support graduate and undergraduate students, and the research will be incorporated into curriculum on nanoscience and technology. A broad array of approaches will be used to disseminate results of the research to technical and non-technical audiences.
