U.S.-Panama International Research and Education: Planning Visit to Panama to Establish a Partnership in Neotropical Paleobiology and Biodiversity

This award supports a team of UF researchers under the direction of Dr. Bruce MacFadden of the Florida Museum of Natural History to go on a planning visit to Panama in September 2006 for 10 days to develop a partnership in Neotropical Paleobiology and Biodiversity with colleagues in that country. The primary goal of the visit is to explore research opportunities on Neotropical paleobiology and biodiversity along the Panama Canal. The research outcomes may increase our understanding of this region as well as help to educate the next generation of Neotropical paleobiologists and evolutionary biologists. The PI and his research team will meet with Dr. Julio Escobar, National Secretary of Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Dr. Jose Causadias, Director of Research and Development. With these contacts, they plan to establish additional collaborations with the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and the Panamanian Museo de La Biodiversidad. Additionally, the investigators will make contacts with Dr. Carlos Jaramillo of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and Rector Carlos Langoni of the Panama campus of Florida State University. The investigators plan to develop a partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) proposal as an outcome of their visit.
