An optical approach to quantum information processing (QIP) involves the use single-photons and other nonclassical light states as fundamental resources. The primary objectives of this project are the development of a high-performance source of single-photons for quantum computing, and the investigation of a new type of entangled optical state that may be less susceptible to errors in quantum communication systems. The experimental methods used for the realization of both of these crucial resources involve photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion. This project focuses on the integration of research and education by helping to establish the infrastructure of a newly formed QIP research group in the UMBC Physics Department. Support of a graduate student engaged in the research, as well the opportunity for participation by undergraduate physics majors, are key components of the program. The project also forms the basis of an outreach effort that links physics students from a Maryland high school with the research.
