A new edition of Immanual Kants Works (Abteilung I) of the Academy Edition of Kants Collected Works

The application concerns the continuation of the DFG long-term project "New Edition of Division I (Works) of the Academy Edition of Kant's Collected Writings". Over a total period of seven years, all 71 Kantian writings in volumes 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of Division I of Immanuel Kant's Collected Writings will be newly edited, presented in a contemporary form, guided by current edition-scientific standards, as a historical-critical edition. The three Critiques (vols. 3, 5) will also be reedited. In terms of application and funding, the project of the new edition of Division I (Works) is independent of the Akademienprogramm and is financed exclusively by third-party funding. The editorial work and scholarly documentation of the writings in Division I – excluding the Critiques – is in the hands of a total of 32 editors, some of whom work together as a team. Accompanying work, supporting research, coordination and communication are the task of the two research assistants in the DFG project. The editing of the online edition is managed by two additional staff members who started their work in the fall of 2020. They are responsible for the data transformation into the XML format TEI P5, which is necessary to ensure the sustainable use of the data, as well as for the creation of the digital edition itself. During the first funding period, editorial and technical preparations were made for the editions; these included the conceptual development of a set of editorial regulations as well as the setup, configuration, and testing of the oXygen XML Author working tool in collaboration with the publisher De Gruyter. Two editors have also delivered finished editions during this period. During the second funding period, work on the remaining 69 editions is progressing, so that at the end of this period about 40% of the editions will be completely finished and 38% predominantly finished (2 of 3 building blocks of the respective edition). In total, by the end of this period, about 85% of all edited texts with their apparatus will have been completed (proof set). The online edition will be completed in its basic structure and functionalities and will be available with a selection of sample texts and a preliminary documentation. In the remaining funding period of 30 months, the goal of completing all editions and submitting the seven volumes to the publisher will be achieved; the online edition will be fully completed by then, as will additional materials and documentation that will be published online in parallel with the print edition.
