Providing a third supplementary volume to the German Pharmacist Biography

It is the primary concern of the project to provide a third supplementary volume to the German Pharmacist Biography (Deutsche Apotheker-Biographie), which consists of four volumes until now. Based on extensive preliminary work, approximately 600 biographies of pharmacists within the German cultural area will be considered. Most of these pharmacists lived in the 20th century, about 200 in the long 19th century and about 60 from the 16th to the 18th century. Apart from the dates of birth and death and important life events, each biography will contain information on personal scientific works, activities as a publisher, a bibliography of the most important biographical works as well as an acknowledgement of their lifetime achievements. It is the aim of this project - compared to the previous volumes - to enhance the proportion of female pharmacists, of industry pharmacists, those who played a part in professional policy as well as pharmacists from the former German Democratic Republic. Furthermore, the volume will contain corrections of the existing volumes due to recent research and a register of names for all five volumes. The third supplementary volume will continue an exceptional work of reference which is currently considered an important standard work on pharmaceutical biographies and used not only by pharmaceutical, medical and natural scientific historians.
