Jewish architects and Jewish architecture in the Federal Republic of Germany, the GDR and Austria after 1945

The research project examines the possibilities and limits of Jewish architects and Jewish architecture in the Federal Republic of Germany, the GDR and Austria between 1945 and 1989. The terms Jewish architects and Jewish architecture refer to various aspects: the life and work of Jewish architects, the Jewish communities as clients for whom a building was being built, buildings erected for Jewish uses as well as the reaction and response to them, among others on the part of the non-Jewish public in the context of official openings. The research questions are: in which architectural, urban and public spaces was Jewish life able to develop and what was the Jewish architects contribution in architecture and city planning? For the first time, Jewish architects and Jewish architecture after 1945 will be in the centre of attention. Thus, the research project will make a major contribution to the history of Jewish communities and Jewish life after the Shoah.
