Assessment of sperm function by using confocal laser microscopy

We have used semen analysis to evaluate sperm function. However, this parameter is not much correlated with fertile potential.we evaluated sperm morphometric parameters of idopathic infertile men and infertile men with valicocele by using confocal laser scanning microscopy and assested whether these parameters measured by this method were correlated with acrosin activity, HOST (hypoosmotic swelling test) , and fertile potential.We concluded as follows.1) The length of sperm mid-piece, ratio of acrosomal region of sperm head, acrosin activity, and HOST is significantly different between fertile men and infertile men.2) The length of sperm mid-piece and the ratio of acrosomal region of sperm head are much correlated with the percentage of sperm motility and acrosin activity, respectively. Inaddition, the percentage of normal morphometric spermatozoa is much correlated with the fertile potential.3) Values of sperm morphometric parameters after varicocelectomy can reliably predict sperm fertilizing potential.
