The purpose of this research project is to investigate the microscopic state of hydrogen which is absorbed or adsorbed by light element-based hydrogen-absorbing materials. It is considered that hydrogen is adsorbed by carbon-based materials in the state of hydrogen molecules, but nobody has confirmed this by microscopic methods so far. In this work, we intended to make clear the state of hydrogen in hydrogen-adsorbed activated carbon (AC) and single wall carbon nano-tubes (SWCNTs) by the Compton scattering method. This method is unique to measure the electronic structure of complicated materials under any gas atmosphere. In the experiment, we developed the in situ scattering chamber in which Compton scattering can be performed under the influence of hydrogen at blow temperatures, as a consequence, we measured the Compton profiles of hydrogen-adsorbed AC (CH0.17, C0.10) and hydrogen-adsorbed SWCNTs (CH0.06, CH0.03). Then, the Compton profile difference (CHx-C), which directly represents the state of hydrogen in the samples, agreed with the theoretically calculated Compton profile of hydrogen molecules. We have first confirmed by a microscopic method that hydrogen is adsorbed by AC or SWCNTs in the stat of hydrogen molecules. This method is very adequate to investigate the microscopic state of adsorbed or absorbed hydrogen.
