A novel filtration-bioadsorption hybrid system in water treatment: Cleaner and safer water for small communities

传统的水处理工艺不能充分去除溶解的有机物，导致致癌化合物和水管中生物膜的形成。在本研究中，将开发一种新型的混合系统，它由生物吸附（生物活性炭（BAC））系统和浮动介质预过滤器。生物活性炭和预过滤器的设计将通过生物量分析、特定有机物表征和粒度分布分析等新技术进行优化。开发的混合装置将是一种具有成本效益和低维护的安全有机物去除系统，特别是在小型供水计划中。

Dissolved organic matter inadequately removed by conventional water treatment processes leads to carcinogenic compounds and the formation of biofilm in the water pipe. In this research, a novel hybrid system will be developed, which consists of a bioadsorption (biologically activated carbon (BAC)) system and a floating medium prefilter. The BAC and prefilter design will be optimized through new techniques such as biomass analysis, specific organics characterization and particle size distribution analysis. The hybrid unit developed will be a cost effective and low maintenance system for safe organic removal, especially in small water supply schemes.
