Powerful radio galaxies are triggered when a supermassive black hole is fed by infalling gas, and represent a spectacular but transient phase in the life of a galaxy. This project will determine whether radio galaxies are born when two galaxies collide and merge, measure how the central black hole mass and gas accretion rate affect the lifetime of a radio galaxy, and investigate why radio galaxies were more common in the past than they are today.
