The research at the Institute of Biomedical Optics (BMO) at the University of Lübeck (UzL), focuses on new optical imaging methods, which are developed with regard to diagnostic applications. For the development of innovative light-based therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, cellular processes are becoming increasingly important. Since there is currently no possibility at the institute for routine, high-resolution imaging of subcellular dynamic processes, a modern confocal laser scanning microscope (cLSM) with 3 excitation wavelengths and 2 detection channels should be acquired. The instrument will significantly support the scientific work of six BMO research groups, external cooperation partners of the UzL and also clinical project partners at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH). On one hand, it will contribute to the development of new optical imaging techniques (Raman microscopy, SLIDE microscopy and coherence tomography or microscopy), and on the other hand, it will be used to investigate the optical manipulation of proteins and cells and the cellular mechanisms of optical diagnostic and therapeutic methods in ophthalmology. Concrete fields of application are, for example, investigations of the intracellular transport of photoactivatable agents with subcellular resolution or the investigation of functional changes of RPE cells in cell cultures after hyperthermia. The device is operated in a dedicated, centrally accessible room in the BMO building and is supervised by qualified personnel.
