The Present State and the Future Prospects of Dynamic Theory of Grammar

The aim of the present study is to examine and analyze some English constructions from the viewpoint of Dynamic theory of Grammar.Along this line of research the two investigators have examined and analyzed several constructions of the present-day English and have so far written five articles in all.Nagahara wrote an article about the position the negative particle occupies in infinitival clauses and showed that there are some semantic differences between the cases in which the negative particle occurs before to and those in which it appears after to.Kono wrote an article about restrictive relative clauses and showed that they have nonrestrictive properties. Kono also wrote a paper concerning the relation between partitive expressions and relative clauses and showed that partitive expressions may occur before relative pronouns only when the antecedents of relative clauses are indefinite. Kono also investigated the syntax and semantics of"Range-Defining Relatives" within NPs and suggested that they should be distinguished from the ordinary restrictive relative clauses. Kono also wrote a paper about "Range-Defining Relatives" which appear outside of NPs and demonstrated that they have not only adjectival properties as restrictive relatives but also adverbial ones as sentential adverbial clauses, and suggested that they are best analyzed within the framework of Dynamic Theory of Grammar.
