Auf der Yangtze Plattform ist eine sedimentäre Abfolge aufgeschlossen, die stratigraphisch von den neoproterozoischen Nantuo Tilliten bis ins Unterkambrium reicht. Dabei sind verschiedene Faziesbereiche erhalten, von karbonatischen, teilweise sogar evaporitischen Flachwasserbedingungen bis hin zu Klastika aus tieferen Ablagerungsmilieus. Verschiedene Bereiche sind durch hydrothermale Vererzungen gekennzeichnet. Eine reichhaltige Faunenvergesellschaftung repräsentiert die biologische Entwicklung während dieses Zeitabschnitts. Die Yangtze Plattform bietet damit eine einzigartige Möglichkeit, die Interaktionen zwischen Atmosphäre, Hydrosphäre, Lithosphäre und Biosphäre zu studieren. Eine systematische geochemische Untersuchung des Schwefel- und des Kohlenstoffkreislaufs in Abhängigkeit der unterschiedlichen Faziesbedingungen soll zum Gesamtverständnis der global bedeutenden Prozesse an der Wende Neoproterozoikum-Altpaläozoikum beitragen.
