Dynamics of quantum-dot based integrated multi-section laser and amplifier structures (B02)

We plan to develop microscopic gain models to investigate nonlinear dynamic effects in complex photonic semiconductor devices that contain multiple integrated sections designed to control, switch or optimize the properties of the emitted light. Besides the fundamental interest, we aim to open new grounds for possible applications within the telecommunication area, where a need for small, i.e. built-on-a-chip, all-optical devices exists. We go beyond the single mode limitation, include longitudinal multi-mode effects and spontaneous emission noise, to be able to investigate also multi-state lasing and mode switching, for which nanostructured mate¬rials (e.g. quantum-dots, submonolayer wells, micropillars) are particularly well suited.
