The Curricula and Pedagogy of Ethics in a Thai Monastic School

My research will address questions about the roles of religious figures and educators in a monasticschool in Thailand. Monastic schools in this context are institutions attached to Buddhist monasteries,and have historically served to educate the boys who temporarily ordained there. I want to explore howthese institutions operate today, now that a secular education system is potentially rendering themredundant. Utilising ethnographic research methods, I will spend time observing, and participating in,activity at the school to understand how the institution functions. I will also make detailed case studiesof classes taught, and interview members of the community, to discover the goals and techniquesemployed in delivering a monastic education. This study will explore issues concerning the extentmonastic schools are affected by changes in educational and religious reform. This research isimportant because it deals with the development and driving principles of education systems. It willinquire as to how far ethical values can be deliberately shaped by a curriculum, and what the enduringinfluence of this process might be on individuals once they leave formal education. These questions arenecessary in developing an understanding of what education is for in different cultural contexts.
