Structure, agency, and commemorative landscapes in Liverpool, 1825-1900: a historical archaeology of nineteenth-century cemetries

The proposed project will reveal the management, development, and landscapes of Liverpool's nineteenth-century cemeteries. Through the lens of structure and agency, the research will investigate the dynamics and strategies of capitalist companies (cemetery owners and monumental masons) in contrast with the personal choices of their consumers (bereaved individuals and social groups). Using Liverpool, a city significant as a global port and early innovator of garden cemeteries, the project will pioneer analysis of historic cemetery development at city level whilst integrating it with current issues of heritage interpretation.
