The Microarray and Bioinformatics Core Facility described in this application has a three part integrated structure. The first relates to the technical ability to produce state of the art microarrays; perform microarray experiments, including RNA labeling, array hybridization and processing, followed up by bioinformatics analysis of complex gene data sets. The arrays being used here are long (70 mer) oligonucleotide arrays on a glass support. These are assayed using fluorescent cDNA probes. The second part is modest technology development in the area of microarray research. This relates to technical optimization and improvements in bioinformatic and statistical analysis and will employ a well-known bioinformatics microarray database for data sharing and data storage. The last component of the core is mentoring researchers in molecular techniques and their applications. There is an inherent collaborative design in the application for working with other areas and applications of the overall program.
