Our interdisciplinary research laboratory, NeoLAB, is based at the Evelyn Perinatal Imaging Centre (EPIC) in Cambridge, and includes investigators from both UCL and Cambridge. NeoLAB has pioneered the development of novel photonic imaging systems and methods, and their application to the study of the newborn infant brain. In collaboration with UCL spinout Gowerlabs Ltd, we are currently developing a fully-wearable near-infrared (NIR) imaging technology. This system is the first device of its kind to provide sampling at multiple (five) wavelengths spanning the NIR range. The technology consists of an array of discrete "tiles" (see figure below) in which three multi-wavelength LEDs and four photodiode detectors are embedded. These are based on a much simpler tile design which has been successfully translated into a commercial device by Gowerlabs. The primary aim of this project is to successfully demonstrate the new system as an effective clinical device. Our interdisciplinary research laboratory, NeoLAB, is based at the Evelyn Perinatal Imaging Centre (EPIC) in Cambridge, and includes investigators from both UCL and Cambridge. This project will incorporate electronics, algorithm development, software engineering, and experimental evaluation of a novel photonics system for imaging the human brain.Industry or clinical engagementThe project will involve collaboration with the Cambridge-based clinical team led by consultant neonatologist Prof. Topun Austin, as well as collaboration with researchers working with a spin-out company Gowerlabs Ltd., which is developing near-infrared photonic systems for brain imaging.
