The project will use highly monitored field trials within a pilot area to assess accumulation behaviour with the aim to investigate the ability of hydraulic models to determine potential discolouration risk sites. In summary this would involve:1. Pilot zone hydraulic modelling to identify potential 'low-flow' material sedimentation risk zones (this could include standard UU hydraulic models and extension to include SIMDEUM models)2. Thorough and detailed DMA flushing of [#1] to validate model findings and the risks from DMA sedimentation. As part of this detailed material characterisation will be undertaken to determine the influence on risk zone location, e.g. heavier particles settling at higher flow zones, so effectively further upstream. This is likely to be significant for different source waters, but as yet no evidence exists. It is envisioned this information may also be used to help inform critical settling flow velocities and then sedimentation models. 3. Repeat DMA flushing [#2/3] to understand the risk-return for sediment accumulations that can drive repeating-contacts and maintenance frequency (this is in contrast to return rates for cohesive layer development as described by the PODSS concepts).4. Application of 'Dynamic DMA' strategies whereby flow paths are modified (such as opening boundary valves) or periodic valve movements with the aim to minimise/prevent sediment accumulations. Further flushing trials [#4] required to evidence benefits.5. Investigate companywide implementation and rollout including business as usual viability
