Loneliness can potentially affect us all throughout our lifetimes, and this is especially true as we emerge from a time when strict lockdowns prevented us from engaging with our family and friends. Individuals of any age can experience loneliness at key transitions points regardless of age (starting university, becoming a parent, bereavement or onset of illness or disability). You can feel lonely within a circle of friends. This project seeks to explore the role in which the increasingly available technology Virtual Reality can have on reducing the issue of loneliness within individuals. By engaging with arange of stakeholders to understand personal issues, a targeted area of loneliness will be address through a set of digital interventions. The aim of the research is to produce bothdigital solutions that can be made available and to provide a framework to follow to develop VR applications. Specifically, this project seeks toUnderstand the role active VR environments can have in supporting individuals experiencing loneliness. Determine the key AI-driven interactions and methods that provide the greatest level of benefit within a VR through participatory design with stakeholders.Produce a toolkit of methods and digital solutions delivered through VR and evaluate these interventions to assess their benefit to the targeted audience.
