An estimated 50% of people with transtibial amputations do not regularly use their prosthesis, primarily due to socket problems (Roffman, 2014). Socket design and technology has developed over the past 50 years to reduce socket discomfort and problems with socket fit that lead to tissue health problems. One such approach is adjustable sockets. The proposed project will aim to evaluate current approaches to adjustable socket designs using a novel simplified "blackbox"/ lumped-parameter model of the socket residuum interface. Such models should enable comparative studies of alternative socket designs to answer two questions: which designs are best/worst and also why are they best/worst?
