Différent ou non?' Bidialectal French speakers' perception of gradient acoustic differences and language attitudes

When people move from their homeland to a new country,they are often exposed to languages and languagevarieties. We know very little about the extent to whichexposure to a new dialect impacts an individual's nativedialect. In my proposed study, I will use experimentalmethods to test whether the perceptual abilities of nativeFrench speakers who have moved from one francophonecountry to another (e.g. from Quebec, Canada to Paris,France) change with regard to their native dialect aftercontinued exposure to a new French dialect. I will alsoexplore whether prolonged exposure to a different dialectresults in individuals showing more perceptual sensitivityto differences in the sound system of their new dialect.Additionally, given the particularly strong ideologies oflinguistic homogeneity in French, I am interested inexploring whether the language attitudes of my Frenchspeaking participants will influence how they perceivedialectal differences in French. I will do so by usinginnovative experimental and survey methods. My study isimportant in a world in which migration and exposure tonew languages is constantly increasing, as it asksquestions related to both our ability to acquire newlanguage varieties, and how our attitudes towards thepeople and countries in which new varieties are spokeninfluences how we acquire these varieties.
