Identity and Community in the Chronicles of Matthew Paris

Bendictine monk Matthew Paris was one of the most recognisable, recorders of and commentators on the politics of the 13th century. Matthew famously upheld the community of the English but, what does that actually mean? This project will utilise an interdisciplinary approach by integrating philosophical understandings of identity to examine how Matthew invokes identity and a sense of community in specific incidents in his texts to reflect his evolving understanding of his identity, as a chronicler and as an Englishman. This will enable us to better trace the shifting intellectual development of identities and political communities.
