Diet and well-being on Belarusian lands from Middle Ages to Modern Time (10th-19th centuries CE)

My proposed project concentrates on the territory of Belarus, so far a blank spot on the bioarchaeological map of Europe, with a goal to explore how the dramatic socio-political transitions of the second millenium (urbanism, feudalism, states) impacted lifeways of its inhabitants and to gain new insights into themes of identity, equality, resilience and adaptation. This study will deploy a combination of stable isotope analysis and morphological investigation of dental pathologies and skeletal stress markers to explore changes in health and subsistence over a timespan of the 10-19th centuries CE, and interpret them in the wider European context.
