This research project aims to produce a novel in vitro 3D bioelectric system of the GI tract with enteric nervous model of the human gastrointestinal track (GI) using electronic/photonic scaffold devices. Thus, allowing for more accurate model than those currently available using animal models/rodent cells. This will allow for continuous electrical monitoring of the bioelectric system, to allow for the observation of the effect of drugs on the electrical nature of GI/ENS over time for enteric pain and monitoring, as well as stimulation of the model through photo -stimulation. This project will mainly involve practical lab-based work growing the different cell cultures and further develop the hydrogel scaffolding to more accurately represent the human GI tract. Experimental techniques will include Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photostimulation, Transepithelial/transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) and (confocal microscopy, SEM).
