This research aims to contribute to the development of a novel commercial sleep wearable. The preliminary objectives are currently: 1) Perform research that quantitatively assesses the device's ability to accurately classify sleep. 2) Qualitatively explore how the device may be able to promote healthy sleep in the general population through behaviour change. This research is taken in partnership with LV, who co-fund this project. Further aims that deviate from the commercial aim of the company will be developed once more details arrive. UK studies have shown a large proportion of borderline-poor (31.6%) and poor sleepers (27.6%) in the adult population. NHS Digital statistics also show that this extends into the young population, with 57.1% of 17-23-year-old respondents reporting problems with sleep on 3 or more nights in the week. Poor sleep (too little or too much) is adversely associated with a range of non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and type II diabetes. In day-to-day circumstances, poor sleep affects cognitive performance, increasing the likelihood of occupational injury and decreasing productivity. Ubiquitous computing can support the general population in achieving healthy sleep behaviour. Low-cost and accurate sensors can build user awareness of sleep habits. Although widely adopted, commercial sensors have been limited in achieving behaviour change, often failing to utilise the increased awareness the devices permit and channel this into an effective sleep intervention. As with other self-guided digital interventions, including those aimed at sleep, attrition (drop-off in use) has also been highlighted as a limitation of commercial sleep trackers.
