Developing and implementing a Behavioral Marking System for Assessing Non-technical skills in Engineers in the UK

Behavioural marker systems are used within high-risk industries such as aviation and surgery and consist of a set of critical non-technical skills which are associated with observable and identifiable behaviours. As yet no such set of behaviours has been identified for Engineers in the UK. The proposed research aims at developing a taxonomy of skills and related positive and negative behaviours which are validated through interviews and observations and collection of evidence from Engineering students and employers. This will result in a system by which Engineer's nonfunctional skills can be assessed in a reliable and repeatable way.
