Intercultural and interlingual communication is crucial to the broadening of human knowledge and to the development of societies. This communication is all the more important in the scientific fields, as recently demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for global collaboration. While English is today the lingua franca of science (mainly when it comes to publication), it is often not the language used by scientists to communicate and to learn (in a laboratory environment for instance). Translation thus becomes a needed process for removing barriers and promoting engagement across languages while creating a more open science. Materials found in the field of bioinformatics (the computational analysis of big biological data) are almost exclusively written in English, thus limiting the scope of their application, and preventing engagement with what is already a technical, jargon-heavy field. Tools can be used by scientists to translate scientific materials (e.g. online machine translation services) but often fail to provide accurate and intelligible translations. This becomes particularly problematic when said materials take the form of application notes or tutorials which are designed to be used by scientists to replicate certain experiments or analysis in their laboratory work.
