Investigating Anglo Saxon Survivals in Processional Practice in Post-Conquest England

The Normans were long thought of as Britain's oppressive conquerors, intent onerasing all remnants of pre-Conquest Anglo-Saxon culture; however, recentscholarship has shown that the Normans were in fact assimilators of Anglo-Saxonculture, sensitive to the matter of preserving Anglo-Saxon laws and customs,including liturgical practices. In a new approach towards understanding theperiod of substantial change between pre- and post-Conquest England, I intendto identify and examine what are the Anglo-Saxon survivals in processionalliturgy after the Norman Conquest through detailed analysis of processionalchants and manuscripts between the tenth and fourteenth centuries.
