Processing differences in habitual and non-habitual Bulgarian-English code-switchers

Despite the rapid advancement in the field of code-switching in the past 20 years, research up to date has not thoroughlyexamined code-switching between Slavic languages and English. The semantic and syntactic aspects of code-switchingof Bulgarian-English bilinguals have previously been overlooked. This research project will expand on the literature onprocessing and code-switching by examining the differences between habitual and non-habitual Bulgarian-English codeswitchers and the neurological differences in the two groups. Investigating the reasons behind the frequency of codeswitching of different bilinguals would explain why some code-switch more than others, and whether there are majordifferences in the processing of the two groups. There will be two stages to the data collection. In the first, data fromBulgarian-English bilinguals will be collected through a questionnaire looking at the background, language knowledge,sociolinguistic context, and attitudes of the bilinguals. Afterwards, EEG recordings will be made of the processing ofcode-switched sentences when bilinguals are exposed to various language tasks, such as a sentence production task.The collected data will be statistically analysed using ANOVA.
