Adapting "Global" Britain's Ethical Responsibilities: Mainstreaming R2P in the Commonwealth and its Historical Precedents

The central aim of the project is to understand the UK's obligation to contribute to the development of the R2P norm both in and through the Commonwealth. I thus hope to contribute to various debates such as: whether the UK has a general or special responsibility to protect; the purpose of the Commonwealth today; and how a state might respond to norm contestation by assuming the role of a "norm broker". What the UK and the Commonwealth can together contribute to R2P is untheorised and, given the need to find pluralist solutions to global challenges like R2P, I believe is worth investigating further.
