Composing with Care: A Reflexive Approach to Composing with Oral Histories

My proposed research is a practice-based, interdisciplinary exploration of the ways in which oral histories of migration can be used to positive effect in electroacoustic composition. In partnership with cultural and artistic institutions, I will use both archival recordings and first-hand interviews to create new sound works around the theme of migration. In the process, I will work to develop a reflexive compositional praxis; an ethical approach to collecting and composing with oral histories of migration.Research QuestionsBy addressing the following questions in reference to my own creative practice, I hope to develop answers to my central research question: how can electroacoustic composers work with oral histories of migration in ways that are both affective and ethically responsible?1. Collection: What are the relevant ethical considerations when collecting oral histories of migration? What implications do these considerations have for practice? Do these ethical considerations differ when working with material from the archives, as opposed to recording face-to-face interviews?2. Composition: What are the relevant ethical considerations when composing with oral histories of migration? How can electroacoustic compositional techniques and technologies support, rather than distort, testimonial narratives? 3. Performance and Reception: How can compositions featuring oral histories of migration benefit both migrants and the broader community? How does the format in which the works are presented affect engagement and reception?
